Interesting facts about Brač

Brač belongs to a group of central Dalmatian islands. It's the biggest Dalmatian island. It is 40 kilometers long and its average length is 10 – 12 kilometers. Its total area is 395 square kilometers.
With the Brač channel (78 meters at its deepest), it is 6 – 13 kilometers from the mainland.

To the west, it is separated from the island of Šolta by the Split channel, and to the south of the island of Hvar by the Hvar Channel (depth 91 m). In its immediate vicinity, on the mainland, is Split - the biggest city on the eastern Adriatic coast.

It is believed that Brač was named after an ancient Illyrian word for a deer, a cult animal to its prehistoric inhabitants. According to an ancient tale, the Trojan hero Antenor (the legendary founder of Padua and Korčula) came to the island after the fall of Troy. With him he brought Braha, the Shepherd, Silen, the farmer and Elaf the Seaman. They built their life on cattle, olive growing, viticulture and fishing. By the end of the 18th century, there more than 500 ha of olives and by the end of  the 19th century, more than 12000 ha of vineyards.

In the Renaissance era, the ancient quarries near Pušišća were reopened. During the Renaissance and Baroque eras, whole stonemasonry dynasties were educated there, all up to the present times. Next to Juraj Dalmatinac, Andrija Aleši, Nikola Firentinac, dozens of other stonemasons work there. High quality stone has enabled the creation of a number of great buildings, from the old Christian era, the Renaissance and the Baroque era, to the lush Brač 19th century, when the island more than anywhere in Dalmatia fostered a sense of harmony and composition of architectural masonry and modest houses. In the 20th century, Korčula stone was used in the Budapest Parliament, Trogir stone on Reichstag in Berlin and Brač stone on the White House in Washington.

Today Brač – maybe with the most constructive, most hardworking and frugal citizens – is looking for new paths in development, founded mostly in tourism, which is opening up the whole island with its exceptional and diverse landscapes, which make it a unique cultural and historical area of nature. We invite you to, along with us, get to know the charms of this unique island, its untouched nature and a wealthy historical and cultural heritage.
